(If you don't even know what clotheslines are, better skip this.)
1. You had to hang the socks by the toes... NOT the top.
2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs... NOT the waistbands.
3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes -
Walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.
4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.
5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail!
What would the neighbors think?
6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend,
Or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake!

7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could
Hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y'know!)

8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... Clothes would "freeze-dry."
9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes!
Pins left on the lines were "tacky"!

10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item
Did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item.
11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket,
And ready to be ironed.
12. IRONED??!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!

Even if this was a lot of work, I do wish for those days to some degree. I know there were problems then too, but looking back, it seemed so much easier to live. Do you remember the clothesline?
Good Friday morning. I hope it is as nice a day where you are, as it is here. 64 degrees, low humidity and sunshine....what more could we want?
We don't have any doctor appointments or physical therapy today. I told Jim last night, I didn't want to go anywhere or do anything but rest and relax today.
Our oldest daughter is our power of attorney and she is coming out in the morning to go over our plans when we die; where to be buried, house, wills, etc. Not a fun thing, but we feel it is necessary.
One more thing and I will close out for today. It won't be long before we will be pulling out our fall and winter clothes. I don't know if the 'scarf' trend is still in or not, but so many of the ladies at my church wore them and twisted them in all kinds of shapes. My daughter sent this one to me and I thought I would share here.

Enjoy the weekend!

That's a really cute way to tie a scarf! I need to remember it (takes a long one, though).
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember the clothesline, Linda. The worst was when it started to rain before the clothes were dry! Mad dash!! Then they all had to be hung again. Jeans would be so stiff dried on the line, but the sheets smelled so good!
And yes, again, that those awkward and uncomfortable conversations need to be had. It makes it so much easier when difficult decisions have already been made for those left behind.
Have a happy, relaxing Friday and weekend! Love & hugs.
Oh how I remember Mom's clothesline. I have one now too, always have had. It was almost a required item when we moved into a different place. And the same rules applied. It probably sounds silly to this younger generation but they don't know the 'pleasure' of the bed sheets smelling so fresh. When I read down through the list, one other item came to mind.... the mad dash the whole family made to get the clothes down when it started to rain! lol
ReplyDeleteThe scarves ladies wear can be so pretty. I've often thought of getting some to wear. I love the knot in your picture, but that looks more complicated than my hubby's tie. My father taught me how to do a man's tie. He thought it was a 'requirement' for all women. hahaha
Good afternoon from a very chilly 55* upstate NY! I remember clothes lines, I want my husband to put one up, he said, "Linda, we live in the city now, so no." Ugh..I love a clothes line! The sheets were so nice and crisp. Unfort..we have had those uncomfortable conversations too..have a blessed remainder of a Friday.
ReplyDeleteI remember the clothes line well, I had one until about 1983. Was still using a wringer washer. Thank goodness I got a nice new washer and dryer. No more freezing my fingers off and having my arms ache clear up to the shoulders from sloshing the clothes up and down in the rinse water. And my freezer sometimes had more dampened, frozen clothes then it did food. LOL Have a ncie week-end.
ReplyDeleteI grew up with clotheslines and until a few years ago, still hung by some of the rules mentioned above. When my shoulders/neck became a problem I had to use the dryer. Now I just haven't gotten back to it.
ReplyDeleteI have so many scarfs! They do dress up one's outfit. They where really in style during the '80s, y'all remember? I enjoy them too. My stepmother was a professional seamstress and taught me the proper way to iron. That is a whole other subject!
Please send cooler weather further south? We could use it right about now. ~:)
We had a beautiful cool day here in Michigan. I remember the clothesline. As a child I loved to play among the fluttering clothes. Have a good weekend Linda.
