Ahhhh, Friday!  Don't you love it?  Means the weekend is knocking at the door, church, rest, or fun times.

Tonight Aryn's basketball team plays the team from Lookout Valley.  We live in Lookout Valley and I go to church with one of the players on their team.  She knows Aryn, has played against her before, and I told her she had to be kind tonight to Aryn!  She laughed and said it should be the other way around.

Our trip took a turn yesterday.  We headed toward the Ocoee River Olympic site, but turned left before we even got close.  Jim was the navigator and I turned when he said turn.  We drove through some unknown areas, but always glad to see something new and different.  How we got to Dayton, Tennessee is beyond me, but we ended up eating at The Dayton Coffee Shop on the square of this little town.  Someone had parked a pretty neat car right in front and of course, Jim was intrigued.

Does anyone remember what happened in Dayton, Tennessee in 1925?  Think now....bet you studied it in school.  Right around the corner from the little diner, was history!

The Scopes Monkey trial was held in 1925 in the Rhea County Court House.  William Jennings Bryan was for the prosecution, and Clarence Darrow was for Scopes.

A high school teacher, John Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee's Butler Act, which made it unlawful to teach evolution in any state-funded school. The trial was deliberately staged in order to attract publicity to the small town of Dayton, Tennessee, where it was held. Scopes was unsure whether he had ever actually taught evolution, but he purposefully incriminated himself so that the case could have a defendant.

Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, but the verdict was overturned on a technicality.  The case was thus seen as both a theological contest and a trial on the veracity of modern science regarding the creation-evolution controversy.

I think we are keeping Jesse today.  He came home from the babysitter yesterday with a headache and fever, and my son called to ask if we could take care of him today if he wasn't better.

I have an appointment at 10:30 to have my eyes examined, but Jim said he would be here to stay with him.

I shopped online last night and have all but 2 of my gifts bought and paid for and on their way to my house!  Love it.

MY BELIEFS WILL AFFECT
MY BEHAVIOR!

  1. Well, you and Jim had a little adventure yesterday! Sometimes those surprises are more fun than if you had made it to your original destination! How was lunch in the little diner? The food in those 'mom and pop' places is sometimes better than anywhere else! An interesting history lesson. I did not remember the name of the town or courthouse, but do know about the trial. Good luck to Aryn and her team, and I hope Jesse is feeling better today. If not, Grandma's love will have him like new before the end of the day! TGIF!!

  3. The trip sounds interesting and fun. That car would have turned our heads too. I'd love to drive one of them someday. We always hit the car shows/drive ins whenever one comes to town.
Hope your grandson feels better real soon.
I loved the bit of history. I vaguely remember hearing about that case. Thanks for sharing. I've recently become a history buff. I wish I had done this 48 yrs. ago. :)
Take care. Have a great day.
