Not only has this been a long weekend so far, but it seems like it has lasted a week. It has been raining for 3 straight days now, and the weatherman says it will continue for the next 8 days. When it does like this, and you don't HAVE to get out to go to a job or school or whatever, it makes the days seem even longer. It rained out our 4th of July celebration yesterday, so I purposed to either read, watch TV or nap, and I did a little of all three. Now it is the day after, and seems it will be more of the same.
I downloaded and started reading a new book on my Kindle Fire - GONE GIRL by Gillian Flyn. The write up says: "Gillian Flynn creates an untrustworthy world that changes chapter-to-chapter. Calling GONE GIRL a psychological thriller is an understatement. As revelation after revelation unfolds, it becomes clear that the truth does not exist in the middle of Nick and Amy's points of view; in fact, the truth is far more dark, more twisted, and more creepy than you can imagine. GONE GIRL is masterfully plotted from start to finish and the suspense doesn't waver for one page. It's one of those books you will feel the need to discuss immediately after finishing because the ending doesn't just come; it punches you in the gut." My favorite kind of book is a mystery book, and this sounds like it fits the bill entirely!
Have you read it or heard about it?
As yesterday was a celebration of our country, I found a picture of the first Miss America and thought I would share with you. The pictures of the current ones sure don't measure up to the first, do they? or is that vice versa?

Speaking of measuring up, something has been on my mind lately, and searching the Scriptures has finally given me an answer. Do you tend to judge or accept someone based on their outward appearance? Honestly, do you get to know someone, talk to them, learn their background, what they do, where they come from, etc., or do you gravitate toward someone because they are pretty or handsome or because of what they are wearing, etc.? Be honest. The Lord gives the answer:
I Samuel 16:7
But, the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature;
because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth;
for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
I have shared with you that there is a lady that rides one of our buses to church on Wednesday night and Sunday morning and Sunday night. She sits with me, and when she first came, I told her to look for the paper fan in the book rack and that is where I usually sit, and to sit there with me.
Well, after VBS, the paper fan disappeared. This past Wednesday night she came bearing a gift for me!
She and I had a good laugh and I told her how much I appreciated her thinking of me. Several others that night smiled and said how special that was. A simple gesture from a person who doesn't necessarily dress the best, etc. But looking on the inside is much better than concentrating on the outward appearance. God puts small things in our lives to teach us lessons and we don't even know it at times.
Enjoy your long weekend, and I sure pray your weather is better than ours. We complain when it is too hot and dry; we complain when it is dark and rainy.....are humans ever satisfied?
We're having the same weather here.... rain and thunderstorms ... and to be the same for the next 6 days. But I'm not complaining. We need the rain. Last year was so hot and dry.
ReplyDeleteYour new friend at church sounds like a kind-hearted lady. Human nature always looks at the outward appearance and God wants us to change that and look at the whole person. I read a very moving story about that one time. I'm hoping I can find it again and I'll share it.
I haven't read that book you got but it sounds interesting. That's my favorite kind of book too.
You have a nice restful day. ♥
I have read Gone Girl. I enjoyed it, but found it frustrating at times too.
ReplyDeleteI need to get into the 'story' because I am just beginning and in the intro right now. Thanks for thoughts tho....
DeleteI have not read that book. Let me know how you like it, once you are finished!! Love the fan your new friend gave you! How lovely. You are so right - or should I say, as usual, the scriptures are right! Linda, we have had rain for a week and a half! I don't think it will ever stop. We aren't used to rain all day long here. Enjoy your quiet weekend. We will have one, too!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the book either, Linda.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE a good mystery, though.
Heartwarming to read about your new-found friend...how kind she is and how kind you are too.
In answer to your question to your readers: I try not to judge, but if I am honest, I have to admit that at first glance, my mind does its 'judging' thing. I have to work at it through the help of my Lord. Being non-judgmental is not something that comes naturally to me, I'm afraid. But, I try...and want to do tje Lord's will in everything, so I know that I should not judge. Period.
I want to be the kind of witness and servant that Christ wants me to be. I know that I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me...
Have a beautiful weekend.
Love,
Jackie
I heard about the book before. I haven't yet red it myself, but it is on my to-read list. Which seems to get longer and longer with every book I read..., LOL1
