S'MORES!

I think with fall comes bonfires, hot dogs, and it wouldn't be right without s'mores!  When was the last time you made them?  I admit it has been years and years for me, but I still enjoy them, and know others do too.

I have received two postcards since last posting.
The kitties are from Russia...
The lake card is from Estonia and on the card, the writer said, 'yes, the lake is real'!

We stayed home all day yesterday, so I decided I would cook - which is rare for me...lol  If you have known me very long, you know I don't like to cook and only do it when I absolutely have to.  Jim has always been the cook in our house.  As he has a problem with eating these days, we have to figure out at the last minute what he wants to or feels he can eat, and go from there....take out, or go out, etc.

Last night I made a hamburger pie. One of my daughters was making it last night too, and she gave me the recipe.  I had everything I needed, so off to the kitchen I went.........

The crust is a can of crescent rolls, and how can you lose with that. Hamburger, onion, bell peppers cooked, drained, add a can of tomato sauce, and a package of Italian seasonings.  Place the crescent rolls in a pie pan, then a layer of cheddar and mozzarella (mixed) on the rolls, pour in the hamburger mixture and top with another layer of the cheeses; bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes.

Ok, then, as I was on a roll (no pun intended), I made a pumpkin bunt cake.  It turned out beautifully and was just ok.  I told Jim after it sits for a day or so, the seasonings might be more profound.

September, in Old England, was called Haervest-monath (Harvest Month). This is the time to gather up the rest of the harvest and prepare for the winter months.

There are flowers enough in the summertime,
More flowers than I can remember—
But none with the purple, gold, and red
That dyes the flowers of September!
—Mary Howitt (1799-1888)

Calendar
September's name comes from the Latin word septem, meaning "seven." This had been the seventh month of the early Roman calendar, which is why its name means "seven."

Folklore for the Season
Heavy September rains bring drought.
September blow soft, till the fruit's in the loft.
Married in September's golden glow, smooth and serene your life will go.
If the storms of September clear off warm, the storms of the following winter will be warm.

  1. S'mores! Love 'em! We had them over the 4th of July weekend when all the kids were up and we had a bonfire in the backyard. Except for the mosquitoes, it was fun.

Cute postcards; a heart shaped lake, how fun!

I have a recipe for pumpkin cookies I want to try, maybe today, if time.

  3. I'm impressed with what you cooked/baked.
    It looks delicious!
I made s'mores last fall with my Grands.
I didn't eat any of them, 'cause I don't care for them, but they loved them.
    Hugs,
    J.

  4. The post cards are cute. I love the heart shape lake. We all love s'moors. You can make them under your broiler but there's nothing like the campfire. Your pie and pumpkin cake looks delicious. ♥

  6. [remembering wistfully] Ummm, smores. [drool] It's been Donkey's years since I've had any. Love them but too much sugar for me nowadays. [sigh]

I don't cook either, I do all the cleaning up. Hubby is my cook. If he's not here, that's why God invented restaurants. [giggle] Y'alls supper looked warm, filling and scrumptious. Perfect for a cool day.

    Y'all have a great weekend! ~:)

  7. Golly, I haven't had S'mores in years and years, but they are good! What's not to like? LOL

Your cake looks perfect, and I'm sure will taste even better today! The hamburger pie also looks good. My Joe won't eat things like that. He is a rather picky eater, and if he THINKS he won't like it, he won't even try it. Grrrr. That's why we go out so much. It's just easier.

I love that you are getting so many post cards from such wonderful far away places. Very interesting and exciting! Thanks for sharing the adventure with us!
