Aryn's basketball team lost but she scored 22 points and played a great game. As most parents and grandparents might say, she is gifted with talent, but the others on her team are just there and don't seem to want to win like she does. But, we tell her constantly, it is a team sport and all you can do is your best.
Grayce's soccer team won 3-0 and she scored one of the goals. She is such a delightful child.
Jim and I have decided that we will attend all of the 'home' games for both girls, but we are not going to try to go to the 'away' ones. It took us an hour to drive to and get in to the basketball game last night. Neither one of us can walk a long way and it is just too much for us. It isn't fun being old.
There is nothing unusual going on for us this weekend until Sunday at church. We will just stay in and stay warm. Hope you have a great weekend!
Why is Thanksgiving always on a Thursday?
Thursday seems to have evolved first as tradition, then as a matter of national law. We don't know for sure which day of the week the Pilgrims' famous first Thanksgiving actually occurred, for instance. That Thanksgiving, interestingly, took place in mid-October, not November.
For a brief time beginning in 1668, November 25 was considered the "legal" annual day of Thanksgiving, but that practice lasted only five years. It may be that Thursday became tradition in order to distance the event from the Sabbath day among the Puritan colonists.
Thursday was also a typical day for lectures in New England, with ministers giving a religious talk each Thursday afternoon. This practice may have contributed to the Thursday Thanksgiving tradition. Since George Washington's time, Thursday has been the day, and this was solidified by Abraham Lincoln's proclamation in 1863 designating the national day of Thanksgiving to be the last Thursday of November. Later that was amended to the fourth Thursday in November. It's important here to note that neither Lincoln, nor anyone else, ever declared the Friday after Thanksgiving as the national day of shopping.
The Friday after has become a national day of shopping, though, for some. Not me!! If I avoid stores on any day during the year, it is definitely Black Friday. People go nuts!! Much easier to shop Amazon's deals from the comfort of my home.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry Aryn's team lost, but she is sure a talented athlete. She just needs to continue to do her best, as you stated! I think both girls will understand about you and grandpa only attending home games. Good idea, especially with the cold, nasty weather upon you.
Have a good Friday!
Sorry to hear about Aryn's game. You know..that is a good question about Thanksgiving/Thursday. Lovely new blog look, Linda! Very wintery!!! Thanks for making me smile. Blessings
ReplyDeleteThe whole idea of the day after ("black Friday") has become the retailer's dream. Not for me. People go nuts.
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving has always been a special day for our family but as they say... "things change". I'm not looking forward to it this year. Two of my daughters won't be here. I just want to cancel the whole day.
Sorry to hear about Aryn's game. I hope you and your hubby will be able to see all their home games. I can't do the away games either.
I know what you mean about traveling to so many grandkids and/or nieces/nephews events. It gets to be too much as the aches and pains set in. Plus the money doesn't go as far as it used to. Gasoline just eats up most of our budget as I'm sure it does for most of the American population. We're all hurting in that department.
ReplyDeleteI don't shop on the now anointed Black Friday either. That term didn't come about until recent times and I really wish it would die out. I much prefer shopping on-line if at all. I'm not anti-retail (quite the contrary) but am really weary of all the commercialism in what should be a family time. I've just quit spending. Most especially I've quit giving store bought gifts. We all have enough junk anyway. :) It's so much more personal to receive a card or something homemade.
God bless. ~:)
Sorry to hear that Aryns team lost, but she surely did her part. Good for Grace too. Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear Aryn's team lost. That is always hard!
