Have you started or are you almost through, Christmas shopping? I have not bought a single thing and for the first time in I cant remember how long, I am not motivated to do so. Times are hard and we have no idea what next year or the next will bring us, so we are being very frugal this year. We cut back several years ago and the adults play the Chinese exchange game, where we buy one gift each, unisex, and draw numbers to see what we will get or we can exchange with someone else. The limit is $25.00. The children all draw names also with the same limits. That isn't too much but by the time you buy the gift wrap, ribbon, decorate your door or inside the house, you have spent much more. We have a Christmas breakfast after the actual date, so that the children can spend that day with their children. Food costs money too. We have been trying to come up with another way to save $$$.
I wish I was creative and could make some of the gifts, but sad to say, I am not. Gift cards seem so impersonal to me, but have been told that the kids would rather have that, so they could buy exactly what they want, rather than get something and have to exchange it. I admit, I don't know what is in fashion or what age wants what!
My son and I did find the tree we wanted yesterday. It is a live tree and we will plant after the holidays. At least we are giving back to the earth. It is on my front porch this year, and once we get it fully decorated, will take a picture and share. We will have a small, fake tree in the house. Cali thinks it is put up for her, so that gives her a new toy to play with, and gives me more work to do, keeping her from tearing it all down!
I am taking Jim for some blood work today, due to the new medicine, Xarelto. Church tonight and that is it for my Wednesday.
I hear ya about the expense. We started drawing names last year and it worked well so we did it again this year. We stick to $20. limit and then buy a small, inexpensive gift for each persons stocking.
ReplyDeleteI hear you on the expense..I spent a total of $57 for 2 nieces, and 3 nephews, $25 gift card for my parents, $65 for Liam, $10 for hubby (that was our limit for each other.) I know $65 might not seem alot, but he told us what he wanted and he got it. (many diff. items) That's it..were done. I told my brother & wife please don't expect anything, he is fine with that. As his boys each got something. ANYWAYS, we all love gift cards..that is the best present of all. Hope all goes well with Jim. Blessings
ReplyDeleteIt IS expensive. We give gift cards or cash, now, too, Linda. The kids are too hard to buy for now that they are older. We pick up little things, sometimes, to go with the money, but they really would rather go shopping for what they want (or put gas in the car!).
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing your porch tree! That's a great idea!! Next year, you can decorate it in the yard!!
I'm almost done with my shopping, and you're right. It really is expensive.
ReplyDeleteGlad you found your tree!
My dad is on Xarelto and several of my patients also. I like it much better than Coumadin.
So far, Jim is happy with the Xarelto also...not bruising as much and not having to go for checks so often is a good thing to him.
DeleteI also understand the money and gifts. Each year it just gets harder and harder. This year we've made a decision and put our collective feet down.... no gifts. It sounds awful, especially for someone who has always loved giving nice gifts to everyone, but we can't do it anymore. All the grandkids, except 2. are grown-ups now and they understand. We'll still buy for the 2 little ones but they'll find them under their tree. On Christmas eve, we're just having "a party". Besides, it's about Jesus, love and family --- not gifts. I'll let you know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteI hope Jim does well on the new med.
Take care. ♥
We're having financial difficulties too. Reminds me of 2008 when everything was so tight. We've cut way, WAY back. There will be zero gifts this year, except for one Hubby is making for our 9 year old niece. Aw well. We'll survive somehow. God never forgets His people. I trust Him. And like Carol so rightly said above, the season should be about loving each other and about Jesus. Maybe this is a good wakeup call for the rest of the country. We all have enough "junk" anyway. :) Family and friends are much more precious than stuff.
ReplyDeleteI pray that the Xarelto will work great for your Hubby.
Can't wait to see your Christmas trees and decorations!
God bless. ~:)
I am so tired of the expense of Christmas. We do very little, but it is still an extra expense!
