No, that isn't my dog, I just saw the picture and thought it was cute....so wa-la, my title picture!

How about a look back in time----------------

WashingtonD.C., circa 1919.  Walter Reed Hospital flu ward.  One of the very few images in Washington-area photo archives documenting the influenza contagion of 1918-1919, which killed over 500,000 Americans and tens of millions around the globe.  Most victims succumbed to bacterial pneumonia following influenza virus infection.  With all the flu going around the U.S. these days, I am thankful our hospital wards don't look like that one.

Bea Arthur (née Bernice Frankel) (1922-2009) SSgt. USMC 1943-45 WW II.  Enlisted and assigned as typist at Marine HQ in Wash DC, then air stations in VA and NC.  Best remembered for her title role in the TV series “Maude” and as Dorothy in "Golden Girls".

Three days before his 19th birthday, George H.W. Bush became the youngest aviator in the US Navy.

A Confederate and Union soldier shake hands during a celebration at Gettysburg in 1913.  Image from the Library of Congress. July 1-3, 2013 marks the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Vintage Baked Potato Cart. A legitimate fast food lunch option back in the day.  I love baked potatoes, but prepared that way????  lol

Marilyn Monroe meets Queen Elizabeth II, London, in 1956.  Both women are 30 years old.

Hope you enjoyed the short trip back in history.  Have a wonderful weekend.

  3. I love the old photos and your trip into the past was fun. I didn't know that about Bea Arthur. Interesting. I just watched her in a rerun of Golden Girls. Love that show.
Now she is definitely having a "bad hair day". That's funny.
    You have a good day.

  4. I do so enjoy old photos and history.
I've never had potatoes served that way. Who knows, they might be good? Or not. :)
I'm having a bad hair day too because of all the rain. I'm not going to complain though because I'm just thankful I still have hair. *lol*
Thank you for sharing these! ~:)

  5. What a fun post, Linda! I really enjoyed the vintage photos, and "your" dog, at the top!! I am behind with blogs today. Been running. May not catch up until tomorrow, since we are just back from church and headed out again to a fund raiser for another non-profit group. Have a good night and Sunday!!

  9. That last picture is definitely the truth for me! I often say my hair has a mind of its own. I did not know Bea Arthur was in the military. Very interesting and might explain some of her "no nonsense" and sensible/outspoken attitude she often would exude. The flu is rough stuff - - - especially this year!
